Prep Class for Panel Quilts-Melanie Brown
Bring your panel. If you aren’t sure how you want to make your panel, here are some suggestions:
2. Bring about 1 – 1 1/2 yards of a background fabric.
3. If you want to make a more coordinated quilt with your panel, bring 1/4 – 1/2 yard pieces of 3-6 fabrics that coordinate with your panel.
4. If you have a picture of a quilt similar to what you would like to make, bring that with you.
This is a prep class. It is intended to show you options and give you suggestions help you make up your mind about how you want to finish your panel quilt. After this class, you may change your mind about how you want to make your quilt
Ruth’s Method
For my method you should bring finished blocks.
Bring blocks enough that they can go around the outside of the panel they can be any size you want.
Orphan blocks will work if you don’t have specific ones you want to use.
You will also need some sashing material for fill in.
Melanie’s Method
This is my preferred method. There are many ways to make a quilt using a panel.
I like to use panels because it gives a good focus to the quilt and lets the piecing that is done stand out a bit more.
The first thing I do is measure my panel. If the length and width are not divisible by 2, I add borders to make it. Be sure to add 1/2” for the seam allowances.
Once that is done, you can use 2 1/2” squares, or any other quilting component (triangles, flying geese, blocks) as long as their dimensions are divisible by 2.
I also don’t usually go completely around the panel with the piecing.
I like to piece blocks and use one on opposite corners and maybe 2 or more blocks at the corners and part way down the side and across the top and fill in with a solid piece of fabric.
I think it makes the pieced blocks stand out a little more.
